Colon Cancer
Colon Cancer Basics
People with IBD are at higher risk for colon cancer
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are diseases of the bowel which cause a high degree of inflammation over a long period of time. Although the exact mechanism is not clear, people with these inflammatory bowel diseases are at higher risk for colon cancer. It is recommended that people with these conditions go through periodic colonoscopies and biopsies that can detect changes in the lining of the bowel that might indicate cancer. When those changes are found, doctors generally recommend the removal of the colon.
